The Family VIP Program is a 36-week program condensed to 12 intensive, two-hour didactic and skill-building sessions with 44 extensive homework assignments designed to demonstrate the client's ability to grasp materials taught in class and apply them to their life situation. Each client completes a pre-test, a post-test, an intense, in-depth intake, and a comprehensive final examination. All adult family members are welcome to form groups; each group includes invited victims. Abusers attend different groups than their victims, unless there is no safety risk to joint attendance.
We all experience some stress and tension every day. Sometimes little things can add up until you feel tied in knots and ready to explode. Without knowing how to recognize and address this buildup, it may lead to violence or abuse. The last person you want to hurt is the person(s) you care about the most.
This innovative group treatment uses compassion for oneself and loved ones as an incompatible response strategy for dissipating anger and anxiety arousal. Steven Stosny, Ph.D., presents the treatment, its theoretical and empirical foundations, and research evaluation in his book, Treating Attachment Abuse: A Compassionate Approach.
This program has an 86% success rate for ending physical abuse and a 73% success rate for stopping verbal and emotional abuse. Dr. Stosny’s approach, called HEALS, is a 5-step emotional regulation technique that trains clients to look within to regulate emotions. This internal focus makes them feel far more powerful than blaming their internal experience on loved ones. Clients learn to identify, validate, and change the core vulnerable feelings that trigger anger.
